We are seeking a dedicated and self-motivated Smoking Cessation Practitioner (SCP) to support the delivery of high-quality smoking cessation services for participants in the YorQuit study. This multi-centre randomised controlled trial, funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research, aims to test the effectiveness and acceptability of various approaches to smoking cessation among patients attending for community-based lung health checks in Bradford, Hull, and Leeds. The study is led by Professor Rachael Murray from the University of Nottingham and Professor Matthew Callister from Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust. Working closely with the study participants, you will assess their readiness to quit smoking and develop personalised quit plans, providing support for up to 12 weeks through telephone or video consultations.

You will use knowledge and experience of smoking cessation to provide a high standard of evidence-based cessation support to smokers in accordance with the study protocol and NCSCT guidelines. Candidates must have undertaken and can demonstrate completion of NCSCT Stop Smoking Practitioner Training and associated experience OR have broad vocational experience in a relevant health or counselling field, and understanding of theories and models related to behavioural change, and the ability to provide individually tailored support according to the needs of a particular smoker, and their household circumstances.

You will have excellent communication skills and be able to quickly build a rapport. While this role may be based in geographically dispersed locations, there will be regular in-person team meetings in Nottingham. The successful candidate should be prepared to travel to Nottingham as necessary and at least once per month.

We have four posts available, the posts are offered on a fixed term contract until 31st December 2026. Two of the posts will begin on the 1st November 2024, the other two will begin on 1st January 2025.

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.
