We invite applications for the post of Assistant Professor in Environmental Science which is offered either on the Research and Teaching Track (R&T), or on the Teaching and Curriculum Leadership Track (T&CL).
The post holder will be expected to develop and deliver modular teaching and project student supervision in environmental science or biology, with preference for the areas of climate change science and/or sustainability. Thus the post holder must be able to evidence an excellent understanding of current and future environmental issues. The post will involve lecturing, running seminars, leading field courses and external visits, conducting assessments, devising and overseeing student projects and giving pastoral care to our students.
Applicants for the R&T track will also be expected to develop and deliver a programme of externally-funded research in a relevant area of environmental science or biology, aligned with the research strategies of the Division, School and University. Evidence of production of high-quality peer review journal articles suitable for submission to the Research Excellence Framework is essential; evidence of success in obtaining competitive internal/external research funding would be an advantage. Evidence of high-quality teaching of environmental science within HE would also be advantageous.
Applicants for the T&CL track will be expected to convene module and assist the course director with course management, and curriculum development and design. Evidence of high-quality teaching of environmental science at HE level is essential; evidence of teaching industrially relevant topics in environmental science would be an advantage, as would evidence of teaching administration within the HE sector.
The post will be based within the Division of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (AES). The job involves high-level interpersonal skills: the ability and commitment to work positively and inclusively across multiple teams is essential. The post holder will also work within the University’s regulations and governance in relation to teaching and/or research.
The successful candidate will need to be flexible and might be expected to teach outside their research area, as well as making a wider contribution to the School and University as a whole. Therefore, they need to be collegiate, involving themselves in additional activities, working in teams to deliver projects and taking opportunities to represent the School.
Candidates should have a PhD in Environmental Science or closely-related discipline. Excellent English Language oral and written communication and presentation skills are essential. A postgraduate teaching qualification, or evidence of working towards, would be desirable.
The role is based at Sutton Bonington Campus within the School of Biosciences. Further information about the School is available at: www.nottingham.ac.uk/biosciences
This is a permanent, full-time (36.25 hours/week) position, however job share arrangements may be considered.
Candidates must state clearly in their application whether they wish to be considered for the R&T or T&CL track.
