PhD Studentship: ESRC Research Project, School offers a Fully Funded UK Rate Studentship

Computer Science

Location:  UK Other
Closing Date:  Sunday 08 January 2023

We are now recruiting a PhD (Fully Funded UK Rate, 36 Months, starting as soon as possible, ideally from Nov 2022) for an ESRC funded project, “Return on Cyber Security Investment”.

In collaboration with a private sector and a public sector organisation, this project investigates into cyber security investment decision making at the board level. The project aims to deliver a novel investment decision model that systematically maps cyber threats to investment decision processes elaborated with cost topologies and novel inference rules to reason about Return on Investment (ROI). It will comprehensively capture cyber threat data from multiple cyber threat sources and integrate it into the investment decision processes. The decision model will be extensively evaluated in real world contexts with a private sector organisation and a public sector organisation.

The main tasks are,

1.  Establish current decision-making processes on cyber security investment, by surveying/interviewing representatives of key decision makers (i.e. cyber security managers, board members) from our project partners and established contacts.

2. Deliver a novel decision model, that systematically links cyber threat profiles to the key drivers of ROI, shaped by decision-making processes established in 1.

3. Extensively evaluate and iteratively refine the decision model through conducting cyber defence exercises (CDE) (lab experiment) and real-world applications (field experiment) in two settings, with our industrial partners.

Skill set required for PhD,

Qualitative Data Collection (interviews, field studies, observation) and Data Analysis

Experiment Design (lab based Scenario-based studies and field studies)
