Salary:  £24,174 to £28,756 per annum (pro-rata if applicable) depending on skills and experience. Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Plant & Crop Sciences Technical Team based at our Sutton Bonington campus. We have extensive growth facilities and field trial sites enabling research studies in a wide range of plant and crop species.

The purpose of the role is to provide high-quality, specialist technical and research support within the School of Biosciences.

The successful candidate will be required to provide direct support to research students, both in the field and in the lab. They will also be required to provide technical support to the Glasshouse and Field Trials technical teams.

Duties will include:

Regular routine maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair of Glasshouse, Field and Lab equipment. Equipment includes items such as, Licor 6400/6800, SPAD, Fluoro meter, Rovercam, light sensors and MiniPam.

Ensuring adequate stocks of materials, Ordering consumables and liaising with suppliers.

Provide advice, assist, and train staff and students on Field, Glasshouse and Growth Room activities associated to plant & crop physiology.

Carry out sample collection and crop processing including some assessments e.g. NIR and DUMAS analysis of leaf/grain for protein content. Sample preparation for chemical, plant hormone analysis.

Plan and oversee the day to day running of the crop processing lab, providing supervision to staff and students.

Provide technical support to the Glasshouse and Field Trials teams including Disinfecting, Spraying & Fogging, watering and crop inspections.

Operating large plant machinery, e.g. Tractor, Counterbalance Forklift and Telehandler.

Teaching demonstration assistance and support.

Monitoring Health & Safety in the performance of all duties.


Candidates must have a minimum of HNC in a relevant subject OR equivalent qualifications plus considerable work experience in relevant role OR Substantial work experience in relevant role.

The post is offered on a full time (36.25 hours per week), permanent contract and some out of hours working may be required. Job share arrangements may be considered.
