A fantastic and exciting opportunity has arisen within the Faculty of Engineering’s Electric Vehicle Race Team Workshop for an individual to join and lead this niche team at technician level. Based in the design, assembly and creation of electric vehicles through student projects and initiatives, the job encompasses a hands-on approach to manufacture and managerial aspects too in the effective running of the workshop. We have an experienced, collaborative team of over 140 technical staff, supporting the wider Faculty of Engineering across two University campuses. Our technical teams work closely with staff and students and engage in a varied portfolio of work across all the University’s engineering disciplines.
The Role
The purpose of the role is to provide effective technical manufacturing input, leadership, management and oversight to the Faculty of Engineering’s Electric Vehicle Race Team. The role provides expert mechanical and electrical technical expertise to the manufacture, build and trialling of any projects within the race team. The role supports academic leads with technical skills, project management and production logistics ensuring timescales, deliverables and safety requirements are met and not compromised. The role will also manage activities both in the workshop and in the organisation of worldwide race events regarding the support of students and other volunteers.
Your Experience
- Highly skilled in fabrication techniques in the development of forms, 3D contours and tube manipulation.
- Skilled in the use of Mig and Tig welding.
- Able to operate a range of mechanical workshop equipment, e.g. lathes, milling machines, pillar drills etc.
- Experienced in manufacturing from CAD and drawing mediums.
- Able to interpret and implement work related regulations and procedures and have an understanding of the implications of non-compliance (e.g. Health & Safety).
