PhD Studentship: Reliability characterisation and modelling of gallium nitride devices for power electronics converters

The new emerging gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor transistors demonstrate the potential to push the power converter efficiency and power density to a level never achieved before. They are a promising technology to drive the electric revolution for sustainable transportation and mobility. However, to widely adopt them for industries, GaN transistors’ reliability data must be obtained for power converters design and application. As GaN switches extremely fast in power electronics converters, it brings the challenge to monitor and analyse device reliability where current methods based on silicon may not be directly applied. 

Applicants are invited to undertake a 3-year PhD programme to tackle the challenge of reliability characterisation and modelling of gallium nitride devices for power electronics converters. A comprehensive GaN transistor reliability data covering a wide power range, temperature and operation time will be produced, and a model to predict GaN transistor reliability and lifetime will be developed. It will benefit power electronics researchers to design and control next generation power converters with improved efficiency and reliability. The research will take place at the Power Electronics and Machines Centre, home of the Power Electronics, Machines and Control research group of the University of Nottingham. Excellent candidates will be eligible for partial or full scholarship (stipend and fees).
