Senior Research Fellow (Fixed term)

Applications are welcome for a Senior Research Fellow for a project investigating to work on a multi-university, industry supported project focussing on friction welding.  The MAS group has a large intra-disciplinary team of researchers, engineers, technicians, support staff and academics who work together to deliver research from fundamental to high level TRL.   

The MAS and faculty have an excellent international reputation for high quality theoretical and experimental research funded by EU, EPSRC, BEIS, Innovate-UK and directly with industry. The faculty is also dedicated to equality, diversity, and inclusion; it was the first engineering department in the UK to be awarded an Athena Swan Gold award for advancing gender equality in higher education. The project will enable the enhanced understanding of two friction welding processes (inertia and linear) through the characterisation of two real manufacturing systems that are routinely used by the project industrial partner and through the characterisation of relevant materials (notably Nickel and Titanium alloys) under representative deformation conditions.  The role holder will be responsible for ensuring the programme of work is carried out in a robust, well-managed and well-documented manner. As part of this role, the successful candidate will work with a team of experienced researchers to coordinate and undertake technical work across the project. 

Candidates should have a PhD in a relevant subject or significant industrial experience directly related to mechanical engineering and/or the mathematical analysis of engineering systems. The ability to work in a team, lead both internally and externally, and interact/collaborate actively and professionally with industrial partners is essential. It is essential that the successful applicant is able to actively support knowledge exchange and transfer activities between industrial partners and the University of Nottingham.

This full-time post is available immediately and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 24 months or until the 30 September 2026, whichever is first. Job share arrangements may be considered.

Due to the nature of this post, all offers of employment will be subject to the appropriate level of security clearance and an independent verification of unspent convictions obtained by means of a Basic Disclosure Certificate obtained from Disclosure Scotland, or an overseas police check.
