UKRI funded Research Associate/Fellow to translate Protein-based Drug Delivery Technology

Following the award of a UKRI Engineering Biology Award, The Thomas group (Chemistry) based in the Biodiscovery Institute at the University of Nottingham working in collaboration with the Bradshaw (Pharmacy) and Turyanska (Engineering) group are looking to appoint an Innovation Fellow to facilitate the progression of their protein-based drug delivery technology to a higher TRL through identification of suitable commercial partners.

The Research Associate/Fellow role offers an exciting opportunity to develop experience of working at the interface of academia and business. The role, for which some training will be provided, presents an opportunity for a suitably qualified individual to develop further their business engagement, innovation and entrepreneurial skills while working on a specific knowledge exchange and industry-related project. Specifically, this role will focus on progressing the development of a protein-based drug delivery system being developed at the University of Nottingham.

The successful applicant will join both a well-established research cluster and the Business Partnership Unit (BPU) in the School of Chemistry to work closely with companies and academics to identify, design, develop and deliver a collaborative project, undertake patent and technical literature searches, assess commercial markets, develop business plans and coordinate/deliver technical work in line with health and safety guidelines. The role holder may be required to undertake laboratory work commensurate with the abilities of the person appointed.

The position is suitable with a background in biotechnology, biological chemistry, biomedical sciences, biochemistry or pharmacy at PhD level or near to completion.

Ideally with a specialist knowledge of protein engineering and drug delivery. A demonstrated interest in entrepreneurial activities and technology translation would also be beneficial. The position requires excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to give clear technical presentations.

This post is available on a fixed term basis until 31/03/2026. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours).

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.
