Research Associate/Fellow in Enzyme discovery and characterisation (Fixed term)

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate/Fellow to work on enzyme discovery and characterisation for polyethylene valorisation. Joining the groups of Dr Luisa Ciano, Dr Anca Pordea and Dr Samantha Bryan to express, test and characterise enzyme candidates involved in PE degradation, identified from previous studies carried out within our groups on a PE-degrading microbial strain. 

An exciting opportunity to join three dynamic research groups on an industrially sponsored, multidisciplinary project that aims to tackle a real world problem. Alongside working with fellow researchers at the University of Nottingham, you will also take advantage of the co-supervision offered by the industrial partner, and a short secondment at their facilities will be available to develop specific aspects of the project. 

As part of the role, you will have delegated responsibility for safe laboratory practice within the group and contribute to the smooth running of the research laboratory and day-to-day supervision of PhD and project students. You will also aid in writing publications, present research at national and international conferences and liaise with collaborators. You will be given support to develop and shape your future career, and hence this position may be particularly attractive to those looking to develop their research independence and leadership skills in a supportive and team-oriented environment. You will also be able to undertake a small amount of undergraduate teaching.

You must have (or be in the process of completing) a PhD in biological chemistry, biocatalysis, bioinorganic chemistry or a related discipline. Experience in enzyme expression and characterisation is essential. Experience in metalloenzymes and analytical techniques such as GC-MS, LC-MS and NMR is desirable, and you should be willing to expand your skillset in enzyme discovery and characterisation techniques. Good interpersonal skills and  ability of working in a team to tight deadlines are essential, and you should be comfortable supervising junior researchers. The post is for a period of 12 months, with possible extension subject to funding and is based in the School of Chemistry & The  Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham. The position is available from 1st October 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter. 

Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours) ; however applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 22.5 hours per week). Please specify in your application if you wish to work part time and the number of preferred hours. Flexible working times and a small amount of home working are possible to support those with specific requirements.  

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.
