University of Nottingham (UoN) invites applications for a KTP Research Associate in Electrocatalysis for Hydrogen Production to join our exciting collaboration with AqSorption Limited. Based at AqSorption in Nottingham, you will report to the Managing Director and work closely with AqSorption’s commercial and R&D team.

Fully supported by academic experts within the University’s School of Chemistry and Metal Atoms on Surfaces & Interfaces (MASI) programme, you will lead a strategic project to design and develop electrocatalytic materials and systems to generate high-purity hydrogen at high pressure from aqueous ammonia. Ammonia is gaining significance as a zero-carbon fuel with potential to replace fossil fuels as an energy vector.

As an enthusiastic researcher, this is a career-development opportunity for you to manage a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP).  Through the KTP, you will deliver a high-profile, commercially strategic project that will enable AqSorption to gain an understanding of novel electro-catalyst materials and a capability in the integration of ammonia decomposition with renewable energy sources. AqSorption’s vision is to develop a low-cost energy efficient system to split hydrogen from green ammonia for use in hard-to-decarbonise heavy fossil-fuel engines, such as shipping, rail and road vehicles.

You will have the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to develop commercially viable, innovative solutions and communicate complex information to a variety of audiences within AqSorption, its customers and stakeholders. An awareness of commercial drivers and previous industrial experience is desirable, but not essential.

You should hold a PhD (or near to completion) in Chemistry or related degree with practical electrochemistry and/or electrocatalysis skills. We are looking for a candidate who has knowledge of nanomaterials, surfaces and interfaces and extensive practical skills in electrochemistry and/or electrocatalysis knowledge and experience.

As a people-orientated individual, you will have the ability to influence and engage collaboratively with AqSorption, UoN and other stakeholders. As a proactive person, you will have the passion and desire for creating something new and be enthusiastic and motivated to organise your own time effectively and have a flexible approach to prioritising work tasks.

Throughout the KTP, you will be fully supported and mentored to nurture your talent. You will have your own budget of £2,000 pa for training and CPD, helping you develop your skillset and reach your personal and professional career goals.

UoN is committed to providing competitive employment packages whilst supporting the well-being of its staff to help them reach their full potential. As an employee of UoN, you will have access to the University’s resources and a range of benefits and rewards, including staff discounts, travel schemes and an attractive pension scheme.

KTP is a UK Government scheme promoting sustained and mutually beneficial relationships between universities and industry. This is a full time (36.25 hours), 26 months fixed-term contract.
