Research Technician (fixed-term) – Fungal Biology / Medical Mycology
Applications are invited to the above role to provide laboratory technical support related to research projects in the area of fungal biology concerning pathogen reproduction, evolution and control. Projects are specifically investigating mating and gene flow of the opportunistic pathogens Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans and the impact of climate change on fungal evolution. This post is part of a multinational Welcome Trust award involving collaborative partners in the UK and South Africa with the aim of understanding the biology of adaptation in fungal pathogens.
The post will primarily involve providing technical support for the projects such as planning and conducting experimental laboratory research and generating data, and ensuring the provision of necessary reagents and growth-media to enable smooth running of the projects. The post will also involve record keeping, safety management, data analysis, equipment maintenance, technical supervision/training, and a contribution to general laboratory support and management.
Candidates must hold a minimum of an HNC in a relevant subject, or equivalent qualifications, with a BSc or Masters degree in Biology, Microbiology or a related field desirable. Candidates must have existing skills in microbial culture of yeasts and filamentous fungi, and be familiar with molecular biology techniques (e.g. DNA extraction, electrophoresis and PCR). Experience of genomic and statistical analysis is desirable. It is noted that the role is not suitable for those with immunodeficiencies due to work with opportunistic pathogens, although safe working practices will minimise any risk.
