We are seeking a highly motivated Research Associate/Fellow to join a research project funded by Horizon Europe focussed on developing immune-competent tissue models for testing the biocompatibility of chemicals and biomaterials. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and inspiring research group with ample opportunities to collaborate with members of a large consortium and spend time in collaborators’ laboratories across Europe.

The focus of this project is developing novel organ-on-chip type tissue models with particular interest in barrier tissues (lung and skin) and liver. We are specifically interested in inclusion of immune cells in these tissue models.  The work involves use and optimisation of microfluidic devoices, primary mammalian cell culture, analytical techniques and cell-based assays including but not limited to multi-cell co-cultures, high content cell phenotyping using microscopy and flow cytometry, cytokine production and metabolite characterisation using different techniques.

The post will be based within the School of Life Sciences and led by Professor Amir Ghaemmaghami. The candidate will be required to undertake research and day-to-day management of this research project that requires a high degree of competence in one or more of the research areas listed. An aptitude for critical thinking and a flexible approach to collaborative research is essential, since the project will interact with multiple researchers and disciplines. The successful candidate will be required to work flexibility in order to meet the demands of the project and this will play a major role in ensuring the success of the project.

Candidates should have a PhD submitted or awarded in a relevant biological Sciences area, together with a keen interest and competency in tissue models, characterisation and their applications.

This full-time (36.25 hours per week) post is fixed-term until 31st December 2026. Job share arrangements may be considered.

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.
