Reference
ENG212

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship (3 years) within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham. The student will work with an interdisciplinary supervisory team with expertise in 3D printing, functional low dimensional materials and sensing.

In this project, 3D printing will be used to create novel multimaterial functional structures capable of new ways of sensing underlying material properties. Low dimensional materials, including graphene, perovskites and nanodiamonds will be incorporated into polymer and glass matrices, with the ultimate aim to develop and integrate sensing capabilities for quantum technology devices.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for research and an interest in using 3D printing, materials science, or materials engineering to create innovative products. They will have a background in engineering, physics or chemistry, but also be willing to collaborate with and explore other disciplines, as required to meet the project goals. The project is centred around research at the Centre for Additive Manufacturing and the student will have access to world class facilities https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/cfam/.They will have access to state of the art laboratories and be part of a wide multi-institution and multidisciplinary team.

Eligibility

•    Due to funding restrictions, the position is only available for UK candidates

•    Candidates must possess or expect to obtain, a 2:1 or first class degree in an Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or related discipline.

The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.

The Faculty of Engineering provides a thriving working environment for all PGRs creating a strong sense of community across research disciplines. Community and research culture is important to our PGRs and the FoE support this by working closely with our Postgraduate Research Society (PGES) and our PGR Research Group Reps to enhance the research environment for PGRs. PGRs benefit from training through the Researcher Academy’s Training Programme, those based within the Faculty of Engineering have access to bespoke courses developed for Engineering PGRs. including sessions on paper writing, networking and career development after the PhD. The Faculty has outstanding facilities and works in partnership with leading industrial partners.
