Over £50 million has been invested in the Power Electronics and Machines Centre (PEMC) at the University of Nottingham to accelerate the adoption of electrification technologies into widespread use. This includes a 22-megawatt laboratory dedicated to research, development, manufacturing and testing of electrical machines and drives.

This is an exciting opportunity for ambitious Mechanical Design Engineer to join our friendly and inclusive team at the University of Nottingham. Our team is world leading in advanced electrical machines design, analysis, manufacturing, and testing. The role holder will become part of the team working in this state-of-the-art facility for advanced electrical machines for power generation, marine, aerospace and automotive industries.

The role will involve applying a range of professional engineering skills to develop, design, manufacture, commission, and test novel machine designs and topologies. This role encompasses all aspects of machine and system development including requirements capture, problem structuring, mechanical design, simulation, management of manufacturing, system integration, test design, data capture and analysis, and reporting.

Working as part of a team, the role holder will assume a significant role in implementing solutions for industrial end-users and may also be required to act as technical lead in some projects. This role will work closely with researchers from Nottingham and collaborate with leading industrialists from companies such as GKN, Cummins, Rolls-Royce, Siemens and others.

This is an innovative and growing area of research, and we are open to applicants who may have alternative transferable skills to contribute to this area. Here are some examples of the type of expertise we are looking for, however this list is not exhaustive and exclusive:

  • Development and design experience in novel rotating machine or powertrain systems and solutions.
  • Integration within multi-physics research and engineering teams with the ability to share ideas and information between differing backgrounds.
  • Generation of high-quality CAD models for parts and assemblies for machines, rig fixtures and converter assemblies.
  • Creation of mechanical part and assembly drawings, including detailed tolerancing, for manufacture.
  • Manufacture, installation and commissioning of novel manufacturing systems and solutions, including assembly fixtures and tooling, mechanical systems, and test rigs.
  • Good understanding of materials, manufacturing and assembly processes, and design for manufacture.
  • Experience of working in a relevant industrial or research environment.
  • Experience of project management, tracking and updating components within a bill of materials.

Candidates should have BEng or equivalent in Mechanical / Aerospace / Automotive Engineering at 2:1 or equivalent

The post will be offered on a full-time (36.25 hours per week), permanent with underlying funding contract for 24 months. Job share arrangements may be considered.

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.
