We are inviting applications for a Research Associate/Fellow to work on the NIHR SPCR (School of Primary Care Research) funded project on ‘Violence and Abuse towards General Practice Staff’ in a multidisciplinary project team, led by Dr Shihning Chou, whose main areas of research interest include the prevention of workplace violence, abuse and injury and the associated psychological issues.

The study employs a mixed methods design aiming to understand staff experiences of abuse, aggression and violence by service users and the public in general practice surgeries, possible preventative measures, and interventions. In light of the current staff shortages and high workload in General Practice, it is vitally important to understand workplace issues in order to improve support for the workforce. The study will inform future policies and practice on staff safety and wellbeing as well as staff-patient relations in primary care.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the running of the study and data collection under the supervision of the Chief Investigator. In addition, the role-holder will contribute to the preparation of interim and final study reports and assist with dissemination of study results.

Candidates must hold a PhD (or near completion) in applied psychology, sociology, primary care or applied health research, or the equivalent in professional qualifications and have experience in the research area. Strong skills and experience in mixed methods and qualitative research methodologies and techniques are essential. Ability to effectively collect and analyse qualitative data is essential. The post-holder may be required to travel for interviews in the East Midlands.

This is a part-time (18.13 hours) fixed-term post for 10 months.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Shihning Chou tel: 0115 8466623 or email Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
