The University of Nottingham has newly established a business unit to accelerate the industrialisation of its world-leading research in electrical machines, power electronics and drive systems; Midlands Driving the Electric Revolution Industrialisation Centre -Nottingham Drives Specialist Services (DER-IC, NDSS). The centre has recently seen over £20M of investment in new advanced coil winding machines, MW-class electrical drive test rigs and power supplies, material characterisation and reliability equipment and advanced motor manufacturing facilities. It works across industry sectors including Aerospace, Automotive, Rail, Industrial and Energy and provides services to industry ranging from test services to development, prototyping and low volume manufacturing of Power Electronics, Machines and Drives products (PEMD).        

Zero Carbon is a key University priority, and we are working closely with industry to develop exciting new technologies into commercial applications that will drive delivery of the international commitments to achieve Net Zero Carbon. The NDSS is critical in the acceleration of this translation of PEMD technologies into solutions for a sustainable future.

To deliver and grow this initiative, we have a number of exciting opportunities to join our team. These posts will work on the Industrialisation of Electrical Machines and Drives with the growing Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Group and the Midlands DER-IC – NDSS.                                                              

We have a number of positions available for experienced senior engineers within the following fields:

  • Manufacturing Engineering for Electrical Machines 
  • Electrical Drives Control
  • Test and Validation of Power Electronics, Machines and Drives
  • Mechanical Engineering for Rotating Machines
  • General manufacturing engineering (CNC, automation, robotics) 

You will have experience working in industry and be able to apply practical and innovative approach to underpin this initiative. 

You will work closely with other members of the world leading PEMC group as well as across other research groups in Advanced Manufacturing, Thermofluids and Transmissions. You will also lead and deliver individual and collaborative complex R&D programmes. These will require generating new intellectual understanding, new research concepts and ideas, work across technical disciplines and delivered research outcomes. 

Preferably you will hold a degree and experience in the relevant areas. You can demonstrate abilities to collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams and projects including in the planning, tasking, resource management, liaison with partners and dissemination of research results. You can also apply an excellent research techniques and methodologies, use your communication skills and the ability to be a team leader. 

These positions will be offered on a full-time (36.25 hours), fixed term contract, and they are available immediately. The post is initially available for two years with potential for extension. Job share arrangments may be considered.
