Applications are invited for the above post based within the School of Biosciences at the Sutton Bonington Campus.  

The role holder will have responsibility for the provision of specialist support to experimental work within the Nutrition and Food Sciences laboratories within the School of Biosciences. The role will utilise specialist skills and techniques in in vitro digestion and nutritional composition analysis in order to fulfil an Innovate UK and Protein Industries Canada grant focused on improving the nutritional quality of a plant-based meat analogue. The project involves an industry partner who is the project lead, and 3 teams in the University – The Food Innovation Centre, the Nutritional Composition and Digestibility laboratory and the Sensory Science Centre. 

The role will also support other researchers using in vitro digestion models as well as contributing to the management of the lab facilities including training and supervision of others.

Duties will include:

  • Specialist technical support evaluating the nutritional composition and in vitro digestibility for a range of alternative protein sources, potentially including analyses of protein/ amino acid, lipid/ fatty acid, carbohydrate and mineral contents, and fiber. 
  • Conducting quantitative and qualitative analyses of data and contribute to the interpretation of results.
  • Providing technical guidance and advice to solve complex queries and/or in the support of grant applications and in the contribution to research publications.
  • Contributing to the management of the in vitro digestion and analytical laboratories
  • Contributing to the technical organisation and/or operation of advanced scientific/experimental/ technical work that requires specialist in vitro digestion skills, techniques, and knowledge.
  • Ensuring that the department complies with work related legal and health and safety standards.

Candidates must have a minimum of HNC in relevant subject, 

or 

equivalent qualifications plus considerable work experience in relevant role 

or 

Substantial work experience in relevant role

Candidates must have an understanding of the health and safety regulations and the implications of non-compliance.

Proven technical experience to perform in vitro digestion for the determination of protein digestibility and quality is desirable for the role.

This fixed term, full-time post (36.25 hours per week) is available from 1st November 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter, for a period of 8 months. Job share arrangements may be considered.
